North-South divide widens

23/11/2011
YORKSHIRE and the Humber are among the regions hardest hit by the recession, leading to a furthering of the perceived North-South divide, says new research.

According to PwC’s latest UK Economic Outlook (UKEO), 2012 may show only modest improvement on 2011, with the economy set to grow at little more than one per cent. The report points to a widening gap in the relative fortunes of the UK's regions since the start of the recession. The report's regional household financial stress index forecasts that this is likely to continue against a backdrop of modest UK average growth.

It also shows that growing financial pressures are having an impact on many regions in the North, with the North East and Yorkshire and the Humber among the hardest hit.

Roger Marsh, northern leader of PwC’s government and public sector practice, said: “We expect UK GDP growth to remain subdued at only around one per cent in 2012, with consumer spending flat in real terms next year and unemployment likely to edge up as public sector job cuts outweigh private sector job gains.

"Unfortunately there will be no early end to the financial pressures on households across the country, while our regional growth estimates suggest some further widening of the regional prosperity gap next year.

“Lack of confidence beyond short term survival and uncertainty about money leads people to stop spending, reducing overall demand and growth.

“Nevertheless, there are grounds for cautious optimism in the medium to longer term once the current eurozone uncertainties are resolved satisfactorily. Now is the time to talk up, in a global context beyond Europe, the UK and its regions, many of which have world-class businesses, organisations and universities, to name a few.”

The report also found that public sector job cuts are outweighing private sector employment gains, pushing up unemployment.

Mr Marsh added: “Closing the regional prosperity gap is more difficult than ever for government. Money is tight and the scope for significant transfers to more highly stressed regions is challenging. However, rebalancing the economy in favour of the regions will, in my view, lead to long lasting and more evenly spread economic well-being for UK plc."
